Iourn Home > Time and the Moons > Urovan Calendar

On Urova the calendar has become dependent on the movements of the six moons and how they affect the individual lives of the populace. Other calendars do exist among the demihuman races and other human civilisations such as the Hadaradan Empire. Indeed, the Urovan calendar is influenced by a method of time keeping that predates the gods. The names of the months come from the old druidic tradition, not from the new religions.

It is worth noting that the current time period on Iourn is roughly equivalen to Earth's Dark Ages. Most people are serfs who don't really care what day it is, let along what time of the day it is. For the majority of people, simply keeping a track of the months of the year and the seasons is enough. Those of a religious bent will remember the day of the week so they can tell if it's their holy day, and (obviously) everyone would be able to say whether it is morning, daytime, evening or night. Hours are only used by a minority of sages, wizards and intellectuals.

The Basics

The Iourn day is 28 hours long. It is divided into four parts - morning, daytime, evening and night - each of seven hours in length. The remaining increments of time break down as follows:

  • 7 days in 1 week
  • 7 weeks in 1 month
  • 7 months in 1 season
  • 4 seasons in 1 year

The year on Iourn is, therefore, approximately four times the length of the year here on Earth. The average life expectancy for a peasent is only about 8 years, although some may live as long as 10. It's not uncommon for the pampered to live as long as 15. Living beyond that is remarkably unusual without magical help.

There are seven days in a week - one given over to each god and one to represent the sun. The day named after a particular god is the holy day of that faith. Sunday is set aside as being the only day free from any religious observance. The days of the week are named after the moon gods as follows:

  • Vítday after Vítaeous, god of Life
  • Terday after Terranor, god of Earth
  • Zephday after Zephyre, god Air
  • Caladay after Calafax, god of Fire
  • Sharday after Sharash, god of Water
  • Morday after Mortis, god of Death
  • Sunday after the sun

The months of the year have more prosaic titles. They are a hold over from the ancient names invented by the druids and are named after the practical realities of a mediaeval life. The year begins on the first day of Spring. The names of the months are as follows:

Detailed Information

The timings of sunrise and sunset, mean temperatures, precipitation and hours of daylight are true for Uris, the capital of Norandor. Locations further north will on the whole experience shorter, colder and wetter days; the reverse is true of locations to the south.

Telling the Time

The Hadradan Day is divided into 28 hours. Like the Urovans, the Hadradan's count from 1-28 (not 0-27) when working out the time. The first hour of the day is 1 of the clock; the last hour of the day is 28 of the clock. The table below converts from Hadradan time to Earth time:
