Character Summary

Second youngest of the eight sons of Konig and Gail Njedelstrom. Born on 14 Coldsorrow 200, Thorn is still considered too young to join his brothers and other relations on the fishing boats. He is therefore trapped in the family home doing "women's work". This galls Thorn as he loves the sea.

Original Character Background

This is the original character background provided by Malcolm in the run up to the Crucible of Youth campaign. With the exception of having Kvar marry into the Njedelstom family, and begin using her prognosticating powers for its benefit three generations ago, it needed no alteration.

Prophecy ran deep in the blood of the Njedlstrom family. Generation after generation seers had been born into their line. Sometimes missing a generation, but never dying out. Kvar Njedelstrom was the last seer until her grandson, Salmon, was gifted with the sight.

The Njedelstroms were prominent in their community and their advice was often cautiously sought. They were predominantly fishermen and had never once lost a family member or a boat to the sea. Their premonitions of impending doom sometimes saved the lievs of their neighbours, and sometimes kept them from huge profits; securing the Njedelstrom's position as one of the wealthiest in the area.

Salmon was at one with the sea, but had trouble with his visions, which often came at night buit were not always remembered. Kvar believed when she died he would master the visions completely. Salmon believes the legend of the sunken tower and knows it is his destiny to go to it and unlock its secrets. He will give up fishing if it is his destiny, but rather hopes for fishing-related artefacts if possible, or some tourism possibilities to improve the family business. Sadly his father, Konig, has insisted he goes fishing on the week it is due to appear so he will "have to wait 'til next time".

It falls to Thorn, second youngest of the eight Njedlstrom brothers, to go to the tower. Thorn does not believe the tower exists after having discarded this legend along with the tooth fairy and the squid king. He made a bet with his brother, Salmon, to this effect: if the tower appeared he would walk their with Salmon. If it did not, Thorn could take Salmon's place on the boats for the next year.

Thorn hates cooking although he is quite good at it, but spends most of his time with his mother and aunt in the kitchen. As the second youngest of eight brothers and in the absence of any susters, it was his 'duty' to help the women until his younger brother, Rod, could take over. Thorn loves fishing, he loves the adventure, the thrill of danger, the open sea, the smell of blubber and frest krell squid ink. As the youngest of working age he stays home with his mother de-boning fish, preserving it, cooking it and otherwise selling it. The chance to skip out on this as a matter of "honour" (possibly for a few days) and perhaps find great fishing devices , could not be passed. Thorn thus joined the group from the town anticipating grand adventures outside the kitchen.
