Iourn Home > Gazetteer > Norandor > Rulers and Personalities

Almost all of the vast land of Norandor is ruled by king and dwarf-friend, Yaddagon XIV. At the ripe old age of 17 years, Yaddagon is failing fast and has managed to outlive most of his children. With his only surviving heir a daughter (who cannot succeed by Norandan law) it is feared his death may plunge the proud nation into civil war. This will certainly be the case if Galahyde the Black has anything to say about it. Also known as Galahyde the Bastard (normally behind his back) this dodgy character has always believed himself to be the rightful ruler of Norandor (Galahyde's father, Nelmentes was Yaddagon's bastard half-brother). Galahyde was once a duke who took control of his duchy of Dismallion in the Dark Days of 203 and set it up as an independent kingdom. Korvis is another king who inhabits a small but growing kingdom in the far south-west of Norandor. Korvis' relationship with Yaddagon seem quite friendly at present, Korvis maintaining that he is in exile from his native Salmaynak, and is simply biding his time before returning and reclaiming some title he once lost. Finally, the hobbits of The Wold are represented by their charismatic leader Liddon J. Beredaire - who is apparently a descendent of the famous Nero Beredaire!

Prior to Yaddagon's illness and the appearance of Galahyde and Korvis as autonomous rulers, Norandor was only ruled by one king. The succession of all the kings of Norandor is listed below. Note that Uros is considered to be the first king of the nation, even though he never held the title:

Other Major Players

The following individuals have an important role to play in Norandon affairs. They are not rulers as Yaddagon, Galahyde and Korvis, but they are essential to the running of the country. See the section on society for a more complete explanation of the roles of these individuals.

At the Court of the King

The ageing princess Celestine is the king's only surviving daughter and theoretical heir to the throne, if women were allowed to rule in their own right. Still unmarried, Celestine has a greatly disproportionate number of suitors given her years. She is unlikely to ever produce an heir, meaning that even if she was to become Queen the problem of succession is only postponed a generation.

The great wizard Narramac was a favourite at Yaddagon's court until his disappearance in 196 LE. There was no apparent explanation for his going, and the departure is said to have greatly unsettled the king. In any event, his place at court has been taken by the wizard Gaston. Gaston was once a pupil of Narramac's but was never as strong as his master. Gaston continually sees himself as living under Narramac's shadow even after thirty seasons. Despite this 'failing' Gaston is still probably the most accomplished human wizard in Norandor. He has taken on many pupils of his own (such as the promising Beleus). How Gaston will react to Narramac's return is yet to be seen. However, it is a safe bet that he won't be happy about it.

Alberdark is the king's most loyal adviser and chamberlain, who is happily feuding with the renowned noble, Kristus. This seems a little out of character for chamberlain who is usually considered to be the world's most polished politician, who never lets his emotions show in public. The fact that Kristus is an open supporter of Galahyde the Black may go some way to explain Alberdark's dislike of him. Because of the illness of the King, Alberdark has very much been ruling for Yaddagon over the past few seasons. Some say that he enjoys the power too much.

The most likely candidates to succeed Yaddagon as king are Galahyde the Black, Queston, Jeolin of Neverton, Ralyon Artusi and Solomon Ilik. Anyone of them could strengthen their claim by marrying Princess Celestine, although they each have a claim in their own right. See the succession crisis in the society section.

Quite literally, dozens of other noblemen and women are present at the Norandon court. Far too many to list here in detail. Some of the more notable individuals include Zerical who fulfills the role of Astronomer Divine. He is an important figure to both the king and the eigtheen churches. While Alberdark was away dealing with the return of Narramac, a new advisor to the king appeared on the scene. She is a tall, beautiful and myserious womam called Aylisha and Alberdark is none too pleased about her presence, or the place she seems to hold in Yaddagon's affections. The palace is protected by the fearsome Captain Orthus and the redoubtable Sergeant Culdoon.

The Dukes of the Twelve Duchies

As stated in the society section, much of Norandor is divided into the twelve duchies. The dukes are Kellis, Galahyde, Nethgar, Edvax, Lovax, Devries, Normanden, Ipso, Colharn, Vrexax, Galvus and Gardoneaux. Liddon J. Beredaire of the Wold carries the same rank and influence. The dukes are not often seen at the court, having courts of their own in their respective duchies, but they do occassionally appear before the king. Of course, Galahyde is no longer welcome at court for obvious reasons.

Players from Dismallion

Dismallion is the duchy surrounding the city of Kannalas. It is here that the ex Duke Galahyde (now Galahyde the Black) declared both his independence and his claim on the crown. The servants that Galahyde has kept are loyal to him and not to the king. It is rumoured that the dark sorcerer and all-round bad egg, Mínaris, has joined forces with Galahyde the Black. This is not considered to be the best news the court has heard all year as Míanris is not considered to be entirely human.

High-priests of the Moon Faiths

Due to the unique position of Norandor, and the holy status of the king, many of the High Priests of the moon faiths dwell in this country. Many are even present at the court of the king, acting as his advisors. These high priests include: Lerren of the Vítaen Church of Life; Timisin of the Odyssian Church (Sharrash); Tarex, the High Holy Witness of Doom of the Watchers, Sorgann of the Church of Air; Elgarth of the Arcanum Incognita. The head of the Church of Contention, Lord High General Babann, has an honorary role has head of the Daggers of Norandor - the kingdom's standing army. Sesnic Lodrath, first flame of the Grand Conflagration is a much more common figure of fire than the Firewalker, Tarrasahr. One final mention must be made to Sir Geffris, the paladin lord and leader of the Order of the Hawk. Geffris is a dedicated follower of the Justician Church and is widely tipped to one day become a mention of The Twelve.
