| It can be said
that Kerikal is the most chaotic of all the western countries. Sandwiched
in-between the warring dwarves of Gunstadtan and the evil goblinoids
of the Land of the League of Tooth and Claw, it is safe to say that
the humans of this land are shat on in every direction before they
have chance to pull on their trousers in the morning.
Kerikal is north of the Gunstadtan hills and is a cold and inhospitable
place for much of the year. The winters are long and the snows are
heavy. Much of the mountainous terrain is taken by vast evergreen
forests where dark and fell creatures are known to lurk. The population
of white dragons in Kerikal is said to the largest of any human
land, a statistic that isn't lost on the population. The society
of this land, if one can all it that, is as horribly divided as
the goblins to the north. Although Kerikal is less than half the
size of Norandor there must be over two-hundred separate kingdoms
and principalities in the area. Warlords, petty tyrants, wizards
and princes all declaring themselves the rightful rulers of the
land. This leads to may wars, and it is highly unusual for a country
or nation state not be officially at war with some (if not all)
of its neighbours.
What this means for the common folk is disease, poverty, starvation
and death. The mortality rate of children in Kerikal is three times
that of a child in Norandor, and the adults don't often live very
much longer. Peasants are often seen as little more than commodities
by their rulers and used as fodder in pointless battle after pointless
battle. This is not to say that all governments in Kerikal are unenlightened,
but most of them certainly are and as a result evil and barbarism
is widespread.
The religions of the moon gods are at their weakest in Kerikal.
The people are more likely to turn to the old druidic tradition,
or a monastery for aid than one of the established churches. Priests
are seen, rightly or wrongly, as the tools of an oppressive state
and are distrusted. This situation compounded by continual attacks
from the Land of the League of Tooth and Claw makes Kerikal an exceedingly
miserable place to live indeed.
