FAQ

Iourn Home > Gazetteer > Genbasson

Freaks, devils, monsters... all these accusations have been levelled at the Genbassi, and in many cases they have lived up to their reputation. The majority of the inhabitants of Genbasson do not appear to be human. They are misshapen mutants, mongrels and monsters: the products of chaos gone mad. There are those who say that the Genbassi were once human, and that some terrible force changed them into the animals they are today. Others that the mutants are not native to Urova, but were put there by the Hadradans ages ago, and that Genbasson was little more than a internment camp.

This theory would have more credence if it were not for the fact that Genbasson is the worse of all the places in Urova to put something that you don't want to escape. The Straits of Contemplation with Norandor are so narrow in places that a good horse could jump the gap, and the country actually shares a land border with Salmaynak, albeit a relatively small one. The forces of Norandor have heavily fortified their southern border north of Genbasson with dozens of keeps and many soldiers, the Salmayans decided on a pre-emptive strike and have been waging a popular war of extermination on the Genbassi for the last twenty seasons.

One might be inclined to feel sorry for the Genbassi, but they are not innocents. Whatever power warped these creatures created chaotic and unpredictable beings. Some are as perfectly reasonable as a normal man, whereas others are as vile and base as the worst of demons. Of course, one could say the same about any nation of humans.

The Genbassi, despite the amazing physical deformities are a highly organised society. They have to be in order to survive against the Salmayans. They still trade with tolerant Calclafique and often employ mercenaries to act as their go-betweens.
