If Norandor is the cradle of civilisation in Urova then Calclafique is the birthplace of intellectual endeavour. The warm climate, gentle life and fair weather attracted the great thinkers of the Hadradan age. Visionaries who eschewed the violent and imperialist ways of the empire to sit under leafy trees and contemplate such uncontemplatables such as "why are we here?" and other such nonsense. The pursuit of philosophy, theology and thought for thought's sake created a place that the government in New Hadras saw as dangerous in the extreme. They were on the verge of crushing the area many times, and each time they were distracted at the last moment. The final distraction was the Mannenite invasion of 16 PL. The free thinkers used the opportunity to secede from the Hadradan Empire and create their own republic they called Calclafique. There they enjoyed ten years of genuine peace and prosperity before the Hadradans were completely driven off the continent and the Urovans put Calclafique to the torch ironically seeing it as the Hadradan's last hold on their lands.

The story of Calclafique did not finish there. To many Hadradans Calclafique was more than just a place, it was an ideal - a state of being, a utopia; the perfect republic that everyone should strive towards. In a Hadrada that had been sacked, pillaged and generally embarrassed by the Mannenites the desire for change was strong. Over the years, many Hadradan scholars returned to Calclafique as a sort of pilgrimage. Many were killed, but some stayed and taught the locals the tenets of their beliefs - freedom, equality, democracy. Over the years, and through the dark ages, Calclafique emerged as the most enlightened and peaceful of all the countries of Norandor.

However, there was a price. Calclafique does its best to remain neutral in the power struggles that grip the continent, but it is small and easily manipulated by other nations. The map might say that Calclafique is about the same size as Genbasson but this is misleading. The true Calclafique is a republic of about two hundred square miles in the south-east tip of the island. The rest of Calclafique is a wilderness of sparse woodland, plains and desert. This area is populated by nomads, bandits and monsters. It has never been mapped.

The enclave of Calclafique is run by a senate of elected representatives of the people. These senators can come from any walk of life and, theoretically, everyone from the poorest to the richest is represented in the senate. Corruption is not unknown, but it is not rampant. The economy of Calclafique is mainly agrarian, based upon the many vineyards and olive groves that dot the landscape. They are not self-sufficient and must trade heavily with other countries. Because of the dangers of crossing the wilderlands al trade is normally conducted by ship, and the Calclafans do a roaring trade with Norandor, southern Junos and Eldagaire. They are one of the few nations willing to trade with Genbasson, seeing the inhabitants as people first and freaks second.

The philosopher and politician Alakovan currently holds the position of Leader of the Senate. During his tenure, he has increased the powers of his position and some members of the senate fear that soon Alakovan will be more than first among equals. The capital of Calclafan enclave is called Demdomin, and houses all the great institutions of nation.
