Iourn Home > Cosmology of Iourn > The Material Plane

The following text charts the changes that have been made to the Material Plane for the purposes of the Iourn Cosmology. Players should assume that any published rules for the material plane that do not directly contradict to following should stand. Details of the Material Plane can be found in Dungeon Master's Guide p147, Manual of the Planes p41 and The Planar Handbook p135.

Material Plane Traits

  • Normal Gravity
  • Normal Time
  • Finite Size (the world of Iourn)
  • Alterable Morphic
  • No Elemental Traits (although the waxing and waning of the moons can create periods when certain elemental or energy types are dominant)
  • Mildly neutral-aligned
  • Normal Magic

Planar Connections

The following planes are directly connected to the material plane. In order to reach planes that are not on this list a character must traverse a transitive plane, usually through the use of some form of magical spell or device. The rings that surround Iourn can open portals to any world including the elemental planes. However, these are not direct links and make use of the Astral Plane in a similar manner to a teleport spell.

Transitive Planes

  • Astral Plane: The material plane is coterminus with the Astral Plane. Doorways between the Astral and the Material world exist where adventurers can physically enter Astral space. Because of the closeness of the Astral Plane certain spells can reach out to the Astral from anywhere on the material plane and create a connection. Spells such as dimension door and teleport function in this manner.
  • Ethereal Plane: The material plane is both coterminous and coexistant with the Ethereal Plane. Ethereal creatures can exist simultaneously in the ethereal plane and in the material world. It is very easy to cross over to the Ethereal at certain points or using relatively low-level spells.
  • Shadow Plane: The material plane is both coterminous and coexistant with the Plane of Shadow. Shadow creatures can exist simultaneously in the plane of shadow and in the material world. It is very easy to cross over to the Shadow at certain points or using relatively low-level spells. Certain illusions draw upon the plane of Shadow to create semi-real effects.
  • Region of Dreams: The material plane is coterminous with the Region of Dreams. Dream forges a special connection with every thinking creature. When such creatures sleep they create a Portal of Sleep in their minds which allows the trained Dreamer to step into the Region of Dreams. Dream can also be accessed by certain spells. Some locations in the Material World are particularly close to Dream (such as the Cave of Fear in the Karundite mountains of south-westerly Norandor). In such places, sleepers are sucked into the Region of Dreams whether they are skilled Dreamers or not.

Outer Planes

  • The Great Dark: The material plane is coterminous with the Great Dark in seven locations. The Great Dark is located on what is effectively the southern pole of Iourn. It is surrounded by the Enceinte and can be entered via one of the Seven Gates of Perdition. There are no known portals into the Great Dark elsewhere on the Material Plane.
  • The Greymere: The materal plane is coexistant with the Greymere, however direct access to the Greymere from the Material world is utterly impossible without special rituals, artefacts and incantations.
  • The Heavenly Realm: The material plane is conterminous with the Heavenly Realm via a region known as the Weirlands. Quite what trails an adventurer would need to suffer to reach such lands is unknown. Well, it is known but I'm not telling.
  • Void: The material plane is coterminous with the plane of Void. Void completely surrounds the World of Iourn just beyond the flailing rings of light and energy. A creature capable of flight can simply travel from the Material World to Void by crossing the boundary. There are no portals to Void on the surface of Iourn, although it is obviously possible to access Void via the transitive planes.
