Church Inquisitors are diviners and detectives employed by churches to root out the corruption within. While paladins and crusaders dash off on horseback to attack the Church's more obvious enemies, the role of the Inquisitor is to protect the heart of the church. Are they being true to their god? Is there evil at work within the heart of the temple? The Inquisitor does all these things. Not all of the Moon Faiths support a branch of Church Inquisitors. Those that do are listed below:

Arcanum Incognita

By far the most feared Inquisitors are the DESIDERATUM VERITAS of the Arcanum Incognita. In a church of secrets and mysteries, they are the most secret and the most mysterious. Answering directly to the unknown head of the faith, somewhere in Sorostrae, the Desideratum Veritas work to a grand plan unknown to even the highest ranking clerics in Norandor. They are feared, and rightly so, for they command ultimate power. The Desideratum Veritas could depose a high-priest in an instant, and with little more evidence than their say-so. It is said they even have authority outside the church, which is something unheard of in other inquisitions. Members of this order as known as Truth Seekers, or Zetetics.

Agiostic Church

The Agiostic Church keeps a branch of inquisitors known as THE SCRUTINEERS. Scrutineers perform the usual jobs one would associate with such an order, but their greater role is one of auditors who swoop down on unsuspecting temples and go through its accounts with a fine-toothed comb, looking for discrepancies. They are resented more than they are feared, but they carry with them sufficent power to arrest and try members of the faithful. To the Agiostic Church corruption usually means financial embezzlement, but they have the resources to tackle more magical and martial problems.

Church of Contention

Shortly after the Church of Contention was formed, many decades ago, the armies of the Church were involved in a great battle against unspecified forces of darkness. The then head of the Church, Lord High General Krydan Wulgarth, found himself utterly betrayed by his forces. He had eight battalions in his service that day, but seven went over to his enemy. He would have perished were it not for the loyalty of the EIGHTH BATTALION who rescued the high general and saved the day. Wulgarth was so impressed that he turned the Eighth Battalion into a force of inquisitors to stop such a betrayal from ever happening again. Members of the Eighth Battalion are generally liked and respected by members of the Church of Contention, who see them as a necessary reminder of past shame, and a spur to vigilance in the future.

The Justicians

It is unsuprising that the The Justicians should have an order of inquisitors. THE TRIBUNAL has been around almost as long as the Justician Church has. They are respected and seen as doing a job that has to be done. However, they are the most zealous of inquisitions and in recent years many of their own members have been investigated for straying from the true path. The Tribunal is currently going through something of a shake-up. It has been mooted that The Tribunal and the paladin Order of the Roaring Lion will be combined into a single unit, under the command of Sir Kordell. This has met with opposition from both sides. Members of this inquisition are known as Tribunes.

Watchers on the Cusp of Oblivion

Up until very recently, the Watchers on the Cusp of Oblivion did not have an inquisition. However, following the murder of Ulish Van Caspan, the war with the Church of Fire and the realisation that Watchers had conspired to begin and prolong the war, the High Holy Witness of Doom decided something had to be done. Tarex announced the formation of an order known as THE GUARDIANS on the first day of Midsummer 204. He said, "They are called Guardians because they will guard the heart and soul of our faith, and make sure we never again stray from the path Mortis has laid before us." They have been initially placed under the stewardship of Necros Salamar Russ, and currently exist only in Norandor. It is too soon to see how the Watchers will respond to this new body within their ranks.

Movement of the Moons

A member of the Moon Faiths who adopts this prestige class discovers that their new powers are also somewhat affected by the waxing and waning of their governing moon. The Church Inquisitor's spells continue to be affected in the same manner. His other abilities are altered as follows:

  • Extraordinary abilities (Ex) function normally regardless of the position of the moon.
  • Supernatural abilities (Su) do not function during the dark of the moon, but are not enhanced when the moon is full.
  • Spell-like abilities (Sp) are enhanced as spells during the full moon, but are not diminished when the moon is dark.
