Bailey, Michael: Decorated police
officer resident in Winterset, Iowa.
Baker, Bob: Professor of Applied
Cognitive Sciences at Dallas University. Took exception to Ecks's
sunspot theory on 12 December 2000.
Baker, Paco (Special
Agent): Medical doctor and member of the east coast evidence
response team. On 18 December 2000 he revealed that he had recently
been raised from the dead.
Bakowski, Peter (Special Agent):
First victim in the latest Joker killings. Murdered by the Joker
on 2 October 2000. Bakowski was buried in on the I-97's bridge supports
just outside Littlerock, Arkansas. His body had been burned by chemicals.
The corresponding playing card, sent to the mid-west evidence response
team was the 2 of Hearts, soaked in the caustic alkali, Potassium
Permanganate (KMnO4).
Banks, John (Reverend): Reverend
of the gospel church in Estelle, Mississippi. Spoke to Benedict
Oaxaca on 20 June 2001 in connection to case ES174.
Banks seems to have very little time for white people.
Banner, John: Principal of the
Winterset school attended by Elayna Lewis. He is a noted educationalist.
Barnabus, Old (Father): Aged Catholic
priest based in New Orleans and member of the Cult of Revelation.
Barnabus performs exorcisms on behalf of the Pope.
Barnes, Mike: Senior accountant
at the Copperhead Mine in Casper, Wyoming. Barnes is a very gifted
accountant and almost as smarmy as Artemis Black. Barnes found a
way to use a legal loop-hole to save Ward Industries $350m in tax
each year. As a result he is paid an absolute fortune. Unsurprisingly,
this paragon of accountants originally comes from Winterset, and
it is for this reason that Artemis Black hired Barnes to clear up
his finances on 8 January 2001.
Barnet, Arnold: Became the new
CEO of Dynamicorp on 12 October 1949 following the death of Raphael
Burton. The CEO automatically holds a 10% share in the ownership
of the company. This is transferred to the next post holder. Arnold
Barnet is no longer the CEO. The post is currently filled by Thomas
Blackburn. See case TL348.
Barron, Kim: Twenty-second victim
of Apache Joe, murdered in Amarillo, Texas on 9 September 1996.
See case S73.
Bates, Aloysius: Lawyer whose
firm is on retainer to Virginian crimelord, Gerard Blank. Bates
is Blank's personal lawyer; he is good at his job but his personal
ethics and regard for the law have been called into question no
fewer than fifteen times by the law society and the local police
force.
Bartholomew, Jedidiah: Trained
as a white necromancer under a crippled mentor during the latter
quarter of the nineteenth century, Jedidiah Bartholomew defended
the grave yard in Joplin, Missouri against dastardly black necromancers
with the aid of a large gun. In 1894 his spirit was trapped in the
pages of a book, Civil War Joplin: Environs, that should be been
looked after by the Carlton family, but was instead donated to the
local library. On 2 February 2001 that book was picked up by Special
Agent Alex Drake and the spirit of Jedidiah entered the agent hoping
to manifest. He has said he will aid the agents on their case. See
case JOP312.
Bartlett, Brenda: Fifteenth victim
of Apache Joe, murdered in El Paso, Texas on 11 February 1993. See
case S73.
Barton, Raphael: Known to the
world as the founder of Dynamic Industries, this is actually an
alias of the archangel, Raphael. See entry on Raphael
for more details. Also see case TL348.
Bates, James: Became the new Financial
Officer of Dynamicorp on 12 October 1949 following the death of
Raphael Burton. The Financial Officer automatically holds a 10%
share in the ownership of the company. This is transferred to the
next post holder. James Bates is no longer the CEO. The post is
currently filled by Mathew Jones. See case TL348.
Bauer, Kathlena: Seventeenth victim
of Apache Joe, murdered in Laredo, Texas on 4 April 1994. See case
S73.
Bech, Mike: Engineer working in
stress properties, who has been based at Dynamicorp's Think Tank
in Winterset since November 2000 and is on the verge of returning
to Tulsa. A member of the second materials team. See case TL348.
Bell, Stewart: Security guard
who worked nights at the Twin Valley Farm just outside Wichita,
Kansas. Bell was examined by Jane Munroe on 10 January 2001 for
evidence of brain bug impregnation but was found to be clean.
Bennet, Christopher: Co-owner
of a Houston haulage firm with Clive Fenner. Despite Fenner's complicity
in a artefact smuggling ring, Bennet was innocent of any wrong-doing.
See case BV004.
Berkowicz,
Dr David (Special Agent): Physicist and member of the east
coast evidence response team. He participated in the operation to
take down Apache Joe on 1 January 2001.
Bert (Police Officer): Member
of the Pasadena police force sent to help the mid-west evidence
response team in their search of warehouses in the dock area on
12 October 2000. Entered the Coffee 4 Texas warehouse with Special
Agents Stone and Black and was subsequently gunned down by members
of Jesus Martinez's drugs gang.
Bezushko, Rustam: Important member
of the inner circle of the Ukrainian Mafia base in Newark. Like
other members of the inner circle, Bezushko was possessed by a brain
bug. When he was assassinated by Peter Dubieniec on 24 April 2001,
the brain bug left his body and tried to possess the assassin.
Big Mamma: Contact of Chuck Johnson
from his days in the NSA. Chuck and Big Mamma were the only survivors
of a botched mission into the investigation of missing persons in
small town America. Chuck remains in touch with Big Mamma via the
Internet.
Bin Razah, Yousef: South Egyptian
national and member of the Eyes of Sebek for the last 32 years (since
he was 2). Yousef is well spoken and highly educated. In the versions
of 4 June 2001 inflicted on Benedict Oaxaca by alien interlopers,
Yousef and Abdul came to the United States to stop the Tears of
Sebek from destroying Wichita. They would have failed in this endeavour.
Yousef later told Benedict all of this and left him with his business
card. Presumably these events never happened. However, when Jane
woke Benedict from his reverie the following day, he still had Yousef's
card and address. The significance of this is still unknown.
Binks, Norton: Canadian citizen
and leader of the trio of paedophiles who escaped into the badlands
of North Dakota on 17 September 2000 to avoid the RCMP. He was accompanied
by Wilson Devereaux and Andrew Edwards; all were noted huntsmen.
A short and blonde-haired man, Binks was the director of the child
pornography produced by the group. He never escaped the badlands,
and was ripped apart by a werewolf. His remains were discovered
by evidence response on 22 November 2000. See Case DVL017.
Black, Alisha: Fiancée
of civil rights activist Peter Ellis Dean. No-one knows what happened
to her after Dean died in 1962. See case ES174.
Black, Artemis (Assistant Deputy Director,
Evidence Response): Lauded psychologist whose 'out-of-the-box'
thinking has propelled him to superstardom. Quite where Black finds
the time to write his books, record his CDs, produce his TV series,
run his political campaign, give his interviews and licence his
growing catalogue of merchandise as well as fulfill his role as
the operational head of evidence response is anyone's guess. Smarmier
than Bob Monkhouse in baby-oil, it has been suggested that Black's
meteoric rise to fame could have something to do with his link to
the supernatural fiend, The Joker and that he could be on the verge
of a fall from grace. However, if anyone could smarm his way out
of a deal with the devil it would be Artemis. Since the murder of
Eisenstein, Black is acting director of evidence response. He has
recently staged a return to field-work. For full information see
the Artemis Black Casefile.
Black,
Bubba: Professional bouncer who dwells at #1431 Penson Avenue
in Birmingham, Alabama. He has a long criminal record. His phone
was bugged during case BR056,
but all that was discovered was that he loved his dear old ma. He
was never interviewed by the evidence response team.
Black, Roy "Rosy": Criminal
ally of Richard Jackson, killed during the SWAT raid on #2432 Penson
Avenue (Birmingham, Alabama) on 2 October 2000. He was carrying
an illegally modified H&K MPS.
Blackburn, Thomas: Current CEO
of Dynamicorp. He has made a career of being a CEO. He is born and
bred in Winterset and attended Winterset High. His role entitles
him to a 10% stake in the company. See case TL348.
Blackfeather, Gerard (Sheriff):
Local law enforcement in Brownsville, Texas. Contact of the mid-west
evidence response team on case BV004.
He was also roped into case DL1034
by the mid-west team, where he acted as an interpreter for the displaced
Cherokee, Cloud-Dancer.
Blackthorne,
Joshua (Senior Special Agent): A trained psychologist who
studied at Oxford university Blackthorne is a staid establishment
figure and proud of it. He considers the theories expounded by Artemis
Black to be "pap" and is a little resentful that such
rubbish has made Black as famous as he is. Blackthorne was transferred
to the mid-west evidence response team on 26 September 2000 after
his affair with Veronica Cunningham (wife of Leading Agent Paul
Cunningham of the High Threat Response team) was discovered. Blackthorne
regretted the affair, rationalising it as the product of his own
sticky divorce. Blackthorne did not cope well with the supernatural
nature of the cases investigated by his team. Following several
encounters with brain bugs and the ghost of Nathan Harlow, Blackthorne
snapped and was placed on strong medication for megalomania. His
stress also brought about a serious and tenacious stomach ulcer
that caused him great discomfort often invalided him from missions.
This ulcer got progressively worse as time passed, until he was
placed on long-term sick leave on 9 December 2000 (Artemis Black
replaced him as head of the team). At this point Black opted to
retire from the unit, believing that he and the agents were being
manipulated by Eisenstein and he would be better off going it alone.
His last act for the team was to break in some new agents while
collecting an honorary degree from the University of Dallas on 12
December 2000. It was here he fell foul of a vengeful Veronica Cunningham,
who was revealed to be a sorceress. Blackthorne was transformed
into a living statue; although he can no longer move or communicate
he remains aware of his surroundings. He is currently being used
as a door-stop at the Wichita HQ while his colleagues hunt for a
cure. See also: Joshua
Blackthorne Casefile.
Blank, Gerard: A crimelord local
to Fredericksburg, Virgina. Arrested by the critical response unit
on 28 September 2000 after they received word he was involved in
a drugs related matter. This was not the case and the only illegal
thing found at his home was a handful of recently stolen antique
weapons. Blank was released but later rearrested on charges of tax
evasion. He awaits trial in the Virginia State Penitentiary, but
there is only a thin hope of a conviction. His lawyer, Aloysius
Bates, is an infamous but effective practitioner of the art. The
case is currently the purview of Leading Agent Lewis Harrigan and
Special Agent Hank Guthrie at the Richmond organised crime unit.
Blanton, Tom: Senior shift miner
at the Copperhead Mine in Casper, Wyoming.
Bobby: St Bernard belonging to
Nathan Harlow, later adopted by Jane Munroe. Bobby enjoys eating,
sleeping and watching monster trucks.
Borschak, Youri: Assassin who
worked for the Ukrainian Mafia in Newark with his longstanding friend,
Ivan Voltchkov. He was recently accepted into the inner-circle of
the mafia at which point he was possessed by brain bug (as were
all the other inner-circle members). Ivan noticed a change in friend's
personality at this time. In April 2001 Youri (along with Ivan)
killed the Polish assassin Peter Dubieniec. He was sent to deal
with Doctor Julian Turn of the north-east evidence response team
when he insinutated his way into the Ukrainian Mafia. However, Turn
was (inexplicably) able to incapacitate both Youri and Ivan. When
Youri was rendered unconscious the brain bug fled from his body
and Dr Turn killed it. Youri was taken along with Ivan to the mid-west
team's headquarters in Wichita on 11 May 2001 for interrogation.
The team later turned him over to the Department of Agriculture
for analysis. See case NW988.
Bowyers, David: Jane Munroe's
last boyfriend. She finished with him shortly after her abduction
by Apache Joe.
Bradshaw & Dover: Firm of
structural engineers commissioned by the mid-west evidence response
team to verify the mining authority's report into the accident at
the Copperhead Mine, Wyoming on 22 October 2000.
Brain Bugs:
A race of alien nasties also known as the Shaggai. See entry for
the Shaggai for more information,
and casefile 0017-GCF for
full details.
Brickman, Al: Individual on flight
FB104 to Fairbanks, Alaska that was destroyed by the Joker on 4
December 2000. He sat next to Lillian Winter and seemed quite chatty
with her. In addition to sharing the name, Brickman looked identical
to the Alfred Brickman who was head of the FBI before Hoover (and
was also a possible alias for the Joker). Brickman said he was a
business who worked in the oil industry in Juno, Alaska. However,
he was not on the passenger manifest, and the seat he occupied was
registered to James Davies (whose body was found in the crash).
The truth behind Al Brickman has not bee established.
Brickman, Alfred: Director of
the FBI in the 1920s and the last director before Hoover. Brickman
was a direct descendent of Lillith and chosen to be her blind-partner
in The Game. An unexceptional
FBI agent who only rose to power after Lillth took an interest in
him, Brickman received a poison pen letter declaring "B, the
game has begun" and found himself investigating a number of
ritualistic murders in Chicago (that may have been perpetrated by
the Joker). Brickman fell from grace, was indicted for corruption
and murdered in prison by criminals that he put there. However,
in death his soul belonged to Lillith and his spirit went to her.
His spirit was encountered on the ill-fated flight FB104 by Jane
Munroe and Nathan Harlow on 4 December 2000 (where he posed as an
oil executive en route to Juno, Alaska). Brickman was the grandfather
of Artemis Black and the Special Agent Carol Hunter, who was killed
by Damian Snapes while under Black's command. On 22 January 2001
Brickman's spirit manifested in the attic of his survivning grand-daughter,
Lydia Hunter. Brickman tried to kill Jane Munroe, but he was struck
down by Artemis wielding the magic knife given to the agents by
Archangel Mike. Brickman's form was dispelled and he returned to
Hell and to Lilith. See case S89.
Brooks, Kyle: Native of Casper,
Wyoming. Worked for Ward Industries as a coal miner in Louisiana
before returning to Casper and taking over the Copperhead Mine.
He was contacted by the mid-west evidence response team on 5 December
2000 and gave them a tour of the mine two days later when it was
discovered that thefts had occurred.
Brown, Clive (Doctor): Scientist
working on the W-Bosun project at the National Radiological Institute
in Nevada. Even with the theft/disappearance of the main accelerator
chamber, Brown is still running programmes for the project. See
case BRB012.
Brunswick,
Dirk (Special Agent): Most junior member of the north-west
evidence response team, Dirk is the muscle of the team. A skilled
shooter, Brunswick got into Minnesota Tech on a football scholarship.
Once in the FBI he put the tactics of that game to full effect and
specialised in hurting people.
Bryce, Leroy: Senior shift miner
at the Copperhead Mine in Casper, Wyoming who is incongruously scared
of the dark. Killed in a cave-in on 22 October 2000. Bryce was a
great complainer, continually making grievances to his superiors
and to the mining authority. Bryce allegedly made a written complaint
concerning the supports in the shaft where he died one day before
the accident. Subsequent investigation by the mid-west evidence
response has shown that Bryce was in the employ of Ukrainian spy,
Elaine Ross, to illegally dig uranium and a green rice-like mineral
out of the mine. It was this illegal digging that weakened the rock,
and caused the cave-in that killed him. Bryce is survived by one
sister, Doris, who never really liked him much.
Burchill,
Jack (Special Agent): Assigned to the mid-west evidence response
team on 12 December 2000 after causing an 83 car pile-up while giving
chase to a perp in a stolen monster truck. It was this accident
that gave Burchill his signature scar that runs down the left side
of his face from forehead to neck. Underwent psyche evaluation by
Royston Devries on 13 December 2000 before his assignment to case
0021-GCF. He was pulled off
that case to look into the deaths of the west coast team (case 10749),
which led him into contact with the Joker. In an altered version
of this timeline Burchill was murdered by Nathan Harlow, fortunately
after Ecks corrected events this never happened. On 18 December
2000 he was ripped from sternum to stomach by the mirror ghost,
Plum Blossom. He was barely saved and will spend the next six months
recovering. On 18 June 2001 he will return to active duty with the
west coast team. See also Jack
Burchill Casefile.
Butler, Mary: Illegitimate daughter
of Raphael Burton and owner of a 4% share in Dynamicorp. Her current
whereabouts is unknown. See case TL348.
Butler, Perry (Doctor): Botanist
who works at the Twin Valley Farm just outside Wichita, Kansas.
Butler is a short man with an abnormally large mole on his cheek
that draws eyes to it like wasps to jam. He was examined by Jane
Munroe on 10 January for possible brain bug impregnation but found
to be clean.
