Tuesday, 10 October 2000 (continued)

In the evening Blackthorne, Black and Munroe get into a deep discussion regarding case S73 (Apache Joe). Jane is extremely pleased that the other agents are taking such an interest in the case. Jane recounts her horrible experience and how she escaped the serial killer. The three of them thrash out some interesting theories and they do make a small advance in the case.

Apache Joe's goal seems to be to visit a certain number of specific locations. When Jane escaped he started from scratch. He re-visited all the places that he attacked before Jane over the following years. Sadly this revisitation is now complete and without knowing why he is visiting these locations it is impossible to predict where he will go next. Apache Joe seems to change the pattern of his killings and the death of Susie Redden is the beginning of a new pattern, so it is also impossible to predict where he will strike next. Jane is in low spirits.

Also in the evening Artemis Black discovers the fourth playing card in the pocket of his jacket. It is conjectured that it was placed in his pocket earlier in the day. This card is the Jack of Hearts, and has been superheated with hot air until it blistered. Blacks's theory still holds water. Artemis is certainly full of hot air. Blackthorne takes this matter very seriously. He decides to go and see Eisenstein about this personally.
