Introduction
This field guide is to introduce the novice agent into the data
collected and collated by SAMPLE-2. In deference to previously correlated
data we have preserved the classification of Spirit entities as
presented in the Spates Catalogue. This type of classification is
carried on by S-3 concerning non-Terrestrial Originating Phenomena
(nTOP). However it has led us to further refine the Class VII Spirit
category from that presented in the Catalogue, this is due to the
greater analysis performed on this topic.
ETs 101
Aliens exist, live with it. But what constitutes an Alien as opposed
to a demon? The answer is quite simple: aliens exist in the same
space-time continuum as mankind, they may have mind boggling power
or biology but their evolution was bound by the same laws of physics
that ours was. Typically these nTOPs are Class IV and V beings.
Demonology 101
Demons the word has many meanings in many cultures,
far too many to allow us to use it to be specific in a stressful
situation. But the question has to be asked how do these entities
enter into our reality? The answer is two fold, if they have sufficient
aptitude they can cross the dimensions, otherwise they must be summoned.
Summoning can be likened to opening a door between worlds and ushering
a specified creature through. This summoning can be both calling
upon a specific individual or a member of a specific race. Specific
individuals are more complex to summon, but usually easier to bind.
Binding entraps the creature with spiritual energy from the caster,
and thus is a psychically and physically draining experience.
Therefore using the wording as presented in Tobins Spirit
Guide, we can elucidate upon the nature of the nTOPs. First we consider
the names Fiend, Demon and Devil. A fiend is a member of a specific
race which exists in large numbers in alternate dimensions. A demon
belongs to a broad kingdom of supernatural beings; they
show no real homogeneity but are not unique. Devils are always unique
individuals and are usually powerful. Some demons try to impersonate
devils but only Demon Princes possess equivalent power.
Lesser Fiend Class I - III
These creatures can be summoned from alternate dimensions, they
posses no true name because of the minor nature of the
creature. They range in power from ineffective to competent, but
invariably possess a singular ability which poses a risk to the
unprepared.
Fiend Class III-IV
These creatures have true names but have insufficient personal
power to resist a racial summons.
Greater Fiend Class V
These entities can only be summoned to this world via their true
names. Their racial supernatural powers allow them to resist such
summons. It is not unusual for these creatures to answer such calls
only to destroy the summoner who was impudent enough to cast such
a spell.
Demons Class III-V
Demons have not been encountered of lower class, their variety
seems to correlate well with their individual power. Summons are
to be treated with caution, some racial summons work, others do
not, care must be taken when encountering these creatures.
Demon Princes
Named beings of considerable power, individuals of this type have
usually made a name for themselves within mythology. These creatures
can transport themselves to this reality and summon beings of its
ilk.
Devils
Devils are a category unto themselves, this title is equivalent
to labelling them as Miscellaneous. Research and caution are watchwords
when dealing with anything that falls into this group. A note about
Angels and other seemingly benevolent extra-dimensional beings.
These creatures, although appearing as helpful and kind we must
remember they are not human and we do not know their ultimate objectives.
Necromancy 101
Why do we separately classify spirits and demons? Generally this
is performed because spirits are mankinds creations (or remnants)
and thus we can more readily understand them. These entities exist
fractionally out of phase with our reality making them perceivable
but operating under slightly different laws of physics, therefore
they are invariably incorporeal. The causal ties between the living
and the spirits are great and generally allow interaction, whether
directly or via a Class VII spirit. A case can be made to integrate
spirits with nTOPs, but this has be consistently rejected by CINCNTOPFOR.
It would be remiss of me to comment on the nature of spirits without
bringing up souls and the afterlife. The answer to the most fundamental
of questions can be summarised as Yes they both exist.
Technical discussions aside the soul can be imagined to be the spiritual
battery of a creature, when the creature dies it earths
and thus is transmitted to the afterlife (an alternate dimension)
where whatever fate awaits. The important bit is to understand that
this spiritual energy can sometime become improperly earthed
or alternatively generated without a proper receptacle. Thus it
can be considered as being trapped in this dimension and forming
a ghost.
Annex A: nTOP Classification
Class I: These are undeveloped
forms, roughly on the same developmental level as the common earth
worm. Interaction with the environment is limited and enigmatic
(e.g. spectral lights and unusual sounds, etc.).
Class II: Manifestations focused
in this time and space. Class II nTOPs and up can physically manipulate
things in this world. These forms are more developed than Class
I and can be equated to animals. This should not allow the agent
to become complacent, imagine a berserk grizzly which is immune
to normal weaponry.
Class III: Semi-sentient entities,
these nTOPs have distinct, but underdeveloped, personalities. However
it is possible for them to form communities of co-operating individuals.
Class IV: Sentient entities. These nTOPs possess well developed
reasoning intelligences and can readily adapt to new environments.
Overall these beings are equivalent in power as a prepared average
human.
Class IV: Sentient entities. These
nTOPs possess well developed reasoning intelligences and can readily
adapt to new environments. Overall these beings are equivalent in
power as a prepared average human.
Class V: Super-Sentient entities.
nTOPs of this class are usually multidimensional in nature and have
significantly more personal power than a Class IV. Their mindset
is usually close enough to humanity to make predictions as to their
future actions.
Class VI: nTOPs of this class
have the ability to personally control large numbers those of lower
classifications. Their innate power is sufficiently above human
possible to make them appear godlike in power. Although it is feasible
for humans to directly confront a Class VI entity and emerge victorious
the cost would be high and planning must be exact. Demon Princes
and Archangels would be good examples of Class VI entities.
Class VII: Godlike Entities. These
nTOPs are exceptionally powerful, exhibit control over subordinate
forms and the ability to manipulate reality. These are often identified
by primitive cultures as Demons or Gods. Naturalising
them is usually a problematical undertaking at best. Most standard
procedures are futile. The most realistic plan is to take measures
to prevent these things from entering this sphere of influence in
the first place.

Annex B : Spirit Classifications
Class I: These are undeveloped
forms, insubstantial and difficult to see. Interaction with the
environment is limited and enigmatic (e.g. spectral lights, voices
and sounds, ectoplasmic vapours, etc.).
Class II: Manifestations focused
in this time and space. Class II ghosts and up can physically manipulate
things in this world. These forms are vague, inconsistent, or incomplete
(e.g. floating sheets, ghostly hands, animated lips, etc.). Some
Class II ghosts have the capacity to return attacks.
Class III: Anonymous Hauntings.
Distinct human form and personality is evident, but former identity
(i.e. as a living being) is not established. If established, ghost
is reassigned as Class IV. Often difficult to deal with, Class III
ghosts generally possess sophisticated means of defence.
Class IV: Identity established.
Distinct human form and personality with known identity, such as
General Custer or Cleopatra. Economic disposal methods include research
into the background of said entities, as well as possible communication
with it.
Class V: These are ectoplasmic
manifestations of definite but non-human form. Speculation includes
the theory that Class Vs are formed from emotionally-charged
events or as side effects from ritual summoning.
Class VI: Ghosts from lower life
forms. Ghost dogs, Giant Penguins, etc. Unique solutions are often
required to handle these entities, including research into habitats,
allergies, natural enemies, etc.
Class VII: Metaspectres. Obsessively
malevolent, exceptionally powerful, and exhibiting control over
subordinate forms, such entities are potentially very dangerous.
These are often identified by primitive cultures as Demons.
Entities which fit this classification include Gozar and Zuul. Neutralising
them is usually a problematical undertaking at best. Most standard
procedures are futile. The most realistic plan is to take measures
to prevent these things from entering this sphere of influence in
the first place.
| Trait |
