The Brief

On 31 July 2000 MacConnel's Airforce Base sent two-hundred dress uniforms to Ho Fung's Original Chinese Laundry in Wichita, Kansas. On 3 August 2000 four-hundred were returned. The extra uniforms were from a batch that had been sent to an army surplus depot in Kansas in 1995. Although they were of an earlier style considerable time and effort had been taken to make the duplicates appear as close to modern uniforms as possible.

The mid-west evidence response team began work on this case on 26 September 2000, taking over from Special Agent Jack Williams. The following is the agents' understanding of what actually transpired.

The Facts

The agents suspect that prior to February 2000, Professor Jenson Gilgoolie of Wichita University was retained by Michael Levin of the Department of Agriculture to work on a special project. A group of arthropods (known hereafter as "brain bugs") are able to enter the brain of a host and affect some measure of control over it. Levin wanted Gilgoolie to come up with a means to detect and kill these brain bugs.

Unfortunately, Gilgoolie was infected by a brain bug himself. He was aware of this however and took immediate steps. He quit his job at the university, withdrew a large amount of cash from his bank account and began living in an deserted outbuilding near the main railway line. It is hypothesised he still retained some control over his faculties at this time, although he was paranoid and increasingly insane. During this time he continued to work on means to destroy the brain bugs. He invented a cocktail of drugs that may or may not have been successful in keeping his own brain bug under control.

Gilgoolie came to believe that the brain bugs had begun possessing some or all of the staff at MacConnell's Airforce base. Gilgoolie formulated a plan to save the airmen. On 1 May 2000 he went to The Right to Bear Arms Army Surplus Store and purchased two hundred USAF uniforms. With the help of homeless companion Lady Elizabeth he was able to take advantage of kindly cleaner, Vicky Costworth, and begin smuggling these uniforms into Ho Fung's Traditional Chinese Laundry in Wichita, Kansas. Over two months he and Lady Elizabeth altered the surplus uniforms to resemble modern USAF uniforms.

On 31 July 2000, two-hundred USAF uniforms were taken to the laundry for cleaning. Before the cleaning Gilgoolie scraped the collars and cuffs. He hoped to be able to test what he found for the presence of the brain bugs. At this stage Gilgoolie impregnated the two-hundred duplicate uniforms with an anti-toxin he hoped would kill (or at least suppress) the brain bug of anyone wearing the uniform. When the original uniforms were returned to the army base on 3 August 2000 Gilgoolie was able to make sure his duplicates went with them. The inattention of night supervisor Luke Miner was essential to this plan.

Gilgoolie continued his work, but the presence of a brain bug in his own head drove him progressively more insane. He died on 28 September 2000 in a fire fight with agents who were trying to help him.

Gilgoolie's body was autopsied by Jane Munroe. She fumbled the incision into the head and green mist escaped. It is hypothesised that Munroe actually struck the bug inside and killed it, or that the bug was already dead by this stage and the incision allowed the gas to escape. Either way, the agents infer that when the brain bugs die they boil away into a green mist leaving no physical trace whatsoever.

Unanswered Questions

  • If Gilgoolie was right about MacConnell Airforce base then how did he find out about it? Did Levin tell him?
  • If Gilgoolie was right, then what are the brain bugs planning?
  • What was the relevence of the score by Nikolai Rosakov, Requiem for the Broken, discovered at Gilgoolie's lab and subsequently in Winterset, Iowa?
  • In light of subsequent events (Case 1097-IN1) it is possible the UFO watchers could provide further information on the brain bugs.
  • If the antitoxin inpregnated in the duplicate uniforms was effective then why did Gilgoolie still have a brain bug in his head when Munroe commenced his autopsy?
  • Neuro-toxins and neuro-viruses are two completely different things? Would Gilgoolie have been able to make both? Did he have help? If so, then who?
