The Brief
On 9 December 2000, Alan Hamblin III was found dead in the snow
outside the agent's hotel room in Casper, Wyoming. He had last been
seen two weeks earlier leaving for the British Museum.
Jane Munroe opened a casefile on Hamblin's death on 12 December
2000. The following is a summary of information known to date. This
investigation is ongoing.
The Facts
Alan Hamblin III was first mentioned by Eisenstein as a purveyor
of occult tomes on 3 November 2000. Hamblin was able to send Black
a copy of the Celaeno Fragments. On 23 November, Hamblin
left for the British Museum in London - this was the last time anyone
ever saw him. Shortly after arriving in London, Hamblin posted a
mediaeval copy of The Book
of Entrance to Artemis Black. It arrived in Casper, Wyoming
on 4 December. On 9 December, Hamblin died in the snow outside the
agents' hotel in Casper, Wyoming after trying to communicate a message
to Artemis Black. He was not dressed for the freezing conditions,
was not carrying a passport and his pockets were full of US and
British coinage. He was carrying a vellum manuscript that is probably
the original Book of Entrance.
He also carried an empty packet of Ukrainian cigarettes.
We know from case 0008-GCF that Hamblin
had discovered a way to travel in time and was using a time portal
in his office in Los Angeles to travel back in time and obtain original
copies of ancient scrolls. He was not necessarily responsible for
the portal Nathan Harlow closed so spectacularly.
During a follow-up to case WNT075, the
mid-west team investigated the mine beneath the Vauntings Place
in Winterset, Iowa. Among other things they discovered a number
of occult symbols linked to photographs of Winterset residents.
These symbols are very similar to the symbols found on Hamblin's
time travel door.
The Tomes
The Celaeno Fragments: Given to
Artemis Black on 3 November 2000. This tome speaks of a means to
physically journey from one place to another. Black will not finish
reading this book until 18 January 2001.
The Book of Entrance: A mediaeval
copy of this book was posted to Artemis Black on 7 December. It
is believed the group now has the original copy as well. The content
is akin to the Celaeno Fragments, but the journey the Book of Entrance
speaks of is a physical one. The translation has been read by Artemis
Black and Dominic Rocaan. A
full text reproduction can be found here.
Unanswered Questions
- Did Hamblin actually go to England? This has not been verified.
- How did he get to Casper, Wyoming? Did he use magic?
- Is Hamblin connected to the Ukrainian commandos in some way?
If not why did he have an empty packet of Ukrainian cigarettes.
- Are the Ukrainians using the magic in the Book of Entrance
or the Celaeno Fragments to transport heavily armed helicopters
around the world?
- Are the Brain Bugs connected to these tomes, to the Ukrainians
and to Hamblin? This seems likely to some degree given the runes
recovered from Winterset on 1 May 2001.
- Is Hamblin's time travelling related to any of these occurances?
- Because Hamblin was a time traveller will the teams meet him
again even though he is dead?
