Investigation into Eric Vitrano's FBI Team

The Brief

In 1995 Walter Crondheim was removed from his long-term post as chief investigator into the Apache Joe killings (case S73). He was replaced by agents Eric Vitrano and Nicole Lavin. Even though Crondheim had almost cracked the case and made all the connections between Joe and the Texas Rangers, Vitrano's team made absolutely no further progress. It is believed that this is because they are using S73 as a cover for something else: but what?

This casefile was opened by Jane Munroe on 12 December 2000, to keep track of this unique investigation. The following is a summary of information known to date. This investigation is ongoing.

Members of the S73 Case Team

The following are members of the team that investigated the S73 case. With the exception of Todd O'Connell this team has been together for five years.

• Special Agent Todd O'Connell

Todd O'Connell joined the team in August 2000 after the death of Special Agent Susie Lyons in a bank siege. He is not privy to the true goals and motives of the team and has therefore been ostracised. He has become something of ally to Jane Munroe, and Jane helped to rescue him from this team when it became evident they planned to kill him. Todd is now in the custody of the mid-west team.

The Facts

Despite the obvious connections, this case may have nothing to do with Apache Joe. Please see case S73 for more information on that matter. These facts pertain only to this case.

Vitrano and his team were left a whisker away from solving this case by Crondheim. They have made less progress in the last five years, that evidence response did in five days of concentrated thought. They are obviously distracted by something.

The computer system for this unit is protected by significantly more security than is reasonable. When the ghostly Harlow hacked their system on 6 November 2000, two MiBs (later identified as agents Ruca and Schmid) arrived in ludicrously short order to apprehend him. They were also armed with ghostbuster-style weapons capable of taking Nathan out.

On 12 December the team pretended to catch Apache Joe. The man that they arrested was a Mexican and father of two called Constatine Perez (probably not a non-secreter). Plus Jane knows what Apache Joe looks like, and his was definitely not Apache Joe. The team gave a number of the relatives of Apache Joe's victims (including Dick Faber, Giles Case and Raoul Martinez) a psychotropic drug that increased their need to see Apache Joe dead. Their plan was to allow Perez to escape and then have one of the relatives shoot him. Todd O'Connell would die in the process, thus covering up loose ends. The mid-west team managed to rescue Todd, but couldn't prevent Perez dying at the hands of Giles Case on 13 December 2000.

Vitrano and Lavin came to the FBI ten years ago from the NSA. This is suspiciously the same time that the Ukraine became and independent state and various sleeper agents (such as Elaine Ross) came into the United States. Artemis Black has theorised that the Ukraine is under the control of the brain bugs and that Vitrano and Lavin are working for this power. Remember that the "Apache Joe" that Jane ran off the road in Sydney was a Ukrainian general. NSA psychic Valerie Hudson told Artemis Black the the pair's records with that agency were incomplete.

The archangel Gabe has told the agents (for a fact) that Apache Joe has been subjected to the same physically enhancing green mineral posted to the agents in Casper, Wyoming.

Unanswered Questions

• What were this team really doing? Why did they think it is important enough to sacrifice the lives of 15 young girls (the number of victims of Apache Joe since they took over the case)?
• What is hidden on their computer system? How can the mid-west team now gain access to it?
• How were these MiBs able to get to Harlow so quickly? Was it something to do with the magic contained in the Celaeno Fragments or The Book of Entrance?
• What was the technology the MiBs were packing? Could this have come from the Brain Bugs?
• Why choose to pretend to catch Apache Joe on 12 December 2000? What had changed that forced their hand? Was it the message from the Ukrainian helicopter in Casper?
• Are Vitrano, Lavin (or any member of their team) sleeper agents working for the Ukraine? Was the message sent from the Mary Estate in Casper meant for Vitrano and Lavin? As ex-NSA agents all record of their lives before 1990 would have been erased.
• Is there a link between the green mineral received in Casper and the enhancing jade pendants found in Los Angeles. Are the pendants simply a refined source of the same power? If this is true what is the link between the brain bugs, the Ukrainians, Apache Joe and Chinese geomancy?
