The Brief
An alien race known as the Signai to some and the Brain Bugs to
evidence response, are active on Earth. They resemble translucent
mosquitoes about the size of house cat, and they can infiltrate
people's brains and control them. A covert war has been fought against
these creatures since the second world war.
The mid-west evidence response team became involved with the Brain
Bugs during their first case on 26 September 2000, and have encountered
them twice since. This casefile was opened by Jane Munroe on 12
December 2000 to correlate disparate information into one source.
The following is a summary of information known to date. This investigation
is ongoing.
Facts about the Brain Bugs
The Brain Bugs are an alien race from Alpha Signai and are extremely
technologically advanced. They possess space craft, although the
enormous difference between brain bug and human physiology would
probably make it impossible for a human to pilot one.
The Brain Bugs look like translucent mosquitoes about the size
of a house cat. They have the ability to phase through solid objects,
and use this ability to phase through the skulls of human targets
and attach themselves to the brain. Once attached to the brain the
alien is in complete control of its human host, as long as it is
conscious. Brain bugs dislike ultraviolet light and therefore tend
to sleep during the day. As a result humans possessed by brain bugs
tend to regain control of themselves during daylight hours. However,
all hosts eventually go mad.
The purpose behind the brain bugs' presence on Earth is unclear.
It is known that they are broken down into several castes and that
those castes are currently engaged in a civil war. The two main
castes are Scientific and Mystic. This civil war has probably saved
the human race, because the bugs are distracted by warring amongst
themselves. According to Valerie Hudson an great army of brain bugs
is on its way to invade the Earth.
Life Cycle of the Brain Bugs
Not all brain bugs are equal. In addition to the 'regular' bugs
frequently encountered by evidence response, there are also queens
and various other sub-types. The queens a large and tangible creatures
that look like a cross between a giant spider and a scorpion. They
can implant fry into human hosts. The fry are able to release endorphins
to mollify the host. The fry turn into nymphs and eat their way
out of the hosts, killing them. The nymphs then grow into leaps
(very much like large spiders). The bite of the leapers releases
a happy, carefree effect in the victim that intices them to come
to queen where they can be impregnated with fry, thus starting the
process again. What happens to leapers is unclear. They may grow
into queens, or they might grow into regular brain bugs. Michael
Levin, also spoke of other specialist brain bugs such as Thinkers.
Whether any or all of these bugs are unique to the Mystic or Science
castes is yet to be determined.
Department of Agriculture
The first recorded human encounter with the Brain Bugs was in 1942
when a marine task force in the South Pacific stumbled across them.
Since then they have been many more recorded encounters in various
countries around the world, although there is no internationally
coordinated effort against them.
Michael Levin began working against the Brain Bugs in 1985. In
1988 he joined an organisation that still exists today within the
Department of Agriculture. This shadowy organisation works covertly
against the Brain Bugs because the aliens have such advanced technology
that to battle them openly would doom mankind.
Certain countries with totalitarian regimes have been completely
overtake by the brain bugs. To create some defence against them,
Levin and other members of the Department of Agriculture devised
a special maize that slowly poisons them in the same way arsenic
poisons a human. This maize has been made into bread and is circulated
widely around Washington.
The Brain Bugs and Evidence Response
The mid-west evidence response team have thusfar encountered the
brain bugs on four separate occasions. These are:
Wichita, Kansas: On 27 September
2000 it was discovered that Jenson Gilgoolie was possessed by a
brain bug. He was working for Michael Levin, attempting to find
a means stop the brain bugs. He was worried that the bugs were trying
to infiltrate MacConnell Airforce Base, but Levin later diffused
this situation with a few deliveries of special bread. See case
WK001.
Clayton, Idaho: On 7 October 2000
it was discovered that the brain bugs had possessed the farming
family that worked on land owned by the Department of Agriculture.
This land was growing Levin's specially modified maize. It was,
perhaps, a warning from the bugs. This case involved the science
caste. See case 1097-IN1.
Winterset, Iowa: On 15 November
2000 the agents encountered members of the brain bug possessed Westwood
Charity. The brain bugs had captured a young girl, Elayna Lewis,
but their purpose for her remains unknown. The leader of the cell
escaped in the body of Levin's operative, Richard Quail. This case
involved the mystic caste, but Quail was not linked to any of the
major factions. See case WNT075.
Wichita, Kansas: On 22 December
2000 Levin told Jane Munroe that Richard Quail was heading to the
Twin Valley Ranch just outside Wichita. This farm was operating
in the same manner as the Prentice farm in Clayton, Idaho. On 10
January 2001, Quail was found to have been sheltered a queen brain
bug. See case 0024-GCF.
Brain Bugs and The Game
According to the Archangel Michael, the brain bugs are players
in the Game. The mysterious Simon went further and told Jane Munroe
that the Brain Bugs were the puppeteers manipulating her blind opponent
in the game. Quite what the bugs have to gain from the Game, and
whether the game is played by Mystic and Scientific castes is unknown.
The Goals of the Brain Bugs
Michael Levin believes that the brain bugs want to subtlely take
over the world. The two castes are going about the same mission
differently. During a follow-up investigation into case WNT075,
the agents discovered several items in the mine beneath Winterset.
Among these were photographs of Winterset residents and mystical
symbols similar to the ones implored by Alan Hamblin III. This perhaps
suggests a link between the bugs and the Book
of Entrance or Hamblin's
Hieroglpyhs. There was also a series of shots of the night sky.
The position of the stars could be extrapolated into a musical notation
that very closely ressembles Rosakov's Requiem for the Broken.
Could the position of the stars have relevence to the bugs in the
same way it had relevence to the cultists in case JOP312?
Unanswered Questions
- How many different factions of warring brain bugs are there?
- Which countries have been taken over by the brain bugs? Specifically,
is one of them the Ukraine? Levin thought this was probably but
could not say for sure.
- What is the remit of Levin and the Department of Agriculture?
Who does Levin answer to? Who is in on his undertakings?
- What relevence does Nikolai Rosakov's Requiem for the Broken
have to the brain bugs?
- What did the brain bugs want with Elayna Lewis?
- Were the brain bugs in Winterset using magic? What was the black
liquid that Quail covered himself in? Does this have to do with
the beliefs of the bugs? If Quail is not linked to any of the
major factions (as Levin suspects) then what was he up to in Winterset
and what is he planning in Kansas?
- How many operatives does Levin have working for him?
- Are the Brain Bugs sharing technology with Dynamicorp? Are they
using Dynamicorp as a cover? If so, why?
