A Room with a View

The Brief

A door in 6-30 West Fifth Street (Los Angeles public central library) has shown a distinct chronological upset. The door is a one-way quantum wormhole whos event horizon is marked by a distinct defractional ripping. A test subject (Buddy the St Bernard belonging to Dr Wilson) was sent through but did not return. There is no known relation between this effect and the dragon lines of Taoshih, desired by Mao Sei Ben. The room does not emit alpha, beta or gamma radiation.

Doctors Mathew Wilson and Anthony Tate of the west coast evidence response team were working on this case prior to their death on 13 December 2000. The mid-west evidence response team began work on the case the following day, before passing it to the new west coast team on 26 January 2001. Their investigation began on 5 February 2001, and the case was officially closed on 6 March 2001. The following is the current understanding of what actually transpired.

The Facts

The door in question is a doorway into the past. A newspaper cutting was found on the body of Dr Wilson was printed in 1941. It contained a story of a stray dog found in a local cemetry. This dog was Buddy the St Bernard. In the words of Gabe the archangel the doorway was an anathema to God and had to be closed.

Something had passed through the portal from 1941 and entered the present. In order for the portal to be closed an equal amount of mass needed to be sent back. Note an equal amount of mass - not necessarily the same "something". Although Buddy the St Bernard had already passed through to 1941, it was evidently not large enough. Something else had to go through to close the portal.

In the event, when Nathan Harlow stepped through the portal his mass corrected the balance and the portal closed. This would have killed Nathan had he not made a bargain with the Devil (see case S89 and Nathan's Casefile). However, this did not change the fact that the entity from 1941 was still loose in the present.

The Entity

The entity from 1941 was slightly out of phase with our reality. It arrived in the sewers under the library and remained there, using them as its lair. It captured and drained the essence of a number of homeless people. It encased their bodies in the filth of the sewers, and implanted them with eggs. However, the eggs were not of its race.

It is believed that the eggs contained the young of the same great desert worm killed by the original west coast team. The young were the same centipede like entities with chitinous tentacles. One such creature was taken alive by the west coast team and thoroughly examined at their headquarters it was found to be extremely sensitive to x-ray radiation.

The explosion of Bruce Campbell-Robson's bomb in the sewers on 6 February 2006 is believed to have destroyed all the young. It is also believed that the original entity was killed by the claymore mines strapped to Campbell-Robson's back. Pending any more evidence the case was eventually closed when it became evident no more of the homeless were disappearing.

The Time Portal

The door in question was also the door to the office of Alan Hamblin III. Although it is conjectured that Hamblin opened time doors in the past to obtain precious scrolls and arcane artefacts from long lost periods of history, there is no evidence to suggest that he actually opened this particular time door.

The section on Time Travel much more adequately explains the mechanics and the results of Nathan's journey in time. The door was removed and is currently kept in the evidence locker at the west coast headquarters.

Unanswered Questions

• Who opened the portal? Was it Hamblin?
• What was the entity that came through the portal from 1941 to the present? It had the mass of one St Bernard and half a Nathan Harlow, and seemed out of phase with our reality.
• What was the entity doing in 1941 before it came through the portal?
• Why was the entity attempting to breed giant desert worms in the sewers beneath Los Angeles? What were its goals?
• Was the entity actually killed by the west coast team?
• Did any of the young worms survive the firestorm in the sewers?
