It crashes and all five hundred people on board are killed except Jane and Nathan. The pair are rushed to hospital in Fairbanks, but the only wounds they have are those inflicted by the Joker himself.

Nathan and Jane are now linked, and beingclose to Nathan makes Jane collapse. Later in the day Nathan speaks to the archangel Gabe who tells him that his soul is in peril and that a leap of faith is required to wipe the slate clean.

16 December 2000

Nathan volunteers to enter a door to 1941 to close down the time tunnel created by Alan Hamblin III. Mass is equalised and Harlow died, but Lillian Winter saves him again. This time Harlow does make a deal with her. He gains control of the pendant, will live from 1941 to 2065 at the peak of health and be taken off the Joker's hit list: the price is 75% of his soul. Once in 1941 Nathan makes few changes to the timeline (but still manages to make himself rich and successful). However, the timeline adapts to these changes and Nathan (bereft of his free will) goes along with them. He murders the infant version of himself in the 1970s, and sets in motion a series of events that kills Henry Devries, Jane Munroe and Jack Burchill.

In order to save their colleagues special agents Ecks and O'Connell go to 1941 to a time just before Nathan materialises but after he made the deal with Winter. They gun him down, killing him and sending what is left of his soul to hell. The timeline is restored to (almost) its original state. Jane accepts that Nathan is truly dead this time, and gives up trying to bring him back.
