Background Information
Early Years
From as early as she could remember, Jane wanted to be a doctor.
Whether it was her own dream, or simply a desire to make her father
happy by following in his footsteps, Jane did not know, but for
the first nineteen years of her life she never considered a future
as anything else. Her childhood in Maine seemed little more than
a warm-up act for the main event. Jane's most notable characteristic
in those formative years was her height, and over that she had no
control.
At heart, Jane was an unremarkable child who grew into an unremarkable
teen. She was bright but excelled at sport. Her height brought her
derision and admiration in equal measure. She was neither extremely
beautiful nor ugly. She had her share of boyfriends, but never let
ardour overwhelm her common sense. Physically she may have stood
above her friends, but in every other way she was one of the crowd.
It was left to Jane's sister to ferment crises in the home. Jane
was the middle child having an elder brother (Edward Jnr) and a
younger sister (Danielle). Edward was solid and dependable, with
every intention of following his grandfather's footsteps into the
navy. Danielle was a bit of a wild-child and from a young age was
always running with what their father called "the wrong crowd".
By the time she was fourteen, Danielle was pregnant and their father
was apoplectic. Danni's argument that as her father was the local
doctor she had no easy access to birth control did not cut the mustard.
The father of the child was Kenneth Steven Anderson, a classmate
of Danni's. Anderson's parents were equally as appalled by this
as Eddie Munroe and steps were taken to cover the matter up. Dannielle
was sent away to "fat camp" and when she came back the
baby had mysteriously vanished. Jane watched these proceedings from
the sidelines, offering what comfort she could to her sister. Danielle
was distraught at losing the baby, and never forgave her father.
She left home at sixteen to pursue "her music" with a
bunch of drunken ne'er-do-wells that thought themselves a rock band.
Eddie Munroe never washed his hands of Danielle. He continued to
send her money and to keep tabs on what they were doing. He blamed
himself for pushing Danielle away and determined that he would be
a more positive influence in the lives of Jane and Edward. In the
few months following departure of Danielle and before Jane left
for college, Jane found this new positive influence of her father
rather stifling. By the summer she was glad to escape.
In the August of 1991 Jane's life truly began. She left Augusta
for the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. For the next
seven years she trained be a doctor. Her father was extremely proud,
and Jane was delighted to please him. She immersed herself in her
studies and made many new friends. Chief amongst them was room-mate
and confidante Kirsty Faber, a local girl two years Jane's junior
who was accepted by the college due to her impressive academic record.
By Christmas Jane had a new boyfriend in the shape of fellow student,
David Bowers. Her life was coming together. On 16 September 1992,
everything fell apart.
Apache Joe
Jane had heard the news reports about a serial rapist and killer
the press had dubbed Apache Joe. Seven girls of Jane's age had been
abducted, raped, scalped and murdered by this individual that year.
Jane was next. On the evening of 16 September 1992 while walking
across campus Jane was grabbed from behind and rendered unconscious.
She awoke in a wooded area without any idea of its location or how
much time had elapsed. It was here she was raped.
Jane was a prisoner of Apache Joe for two days. Everything about
the man was indelibly impressed upon Jane's mind. She knew no-one
had ever escaped Apache Joe, and Jane had no reason to suspect that
she would find a way. On 18 September Jane was bundled into the
back of a van and taken to what Jane assumed would be her death.
Fortunately for Jane, the back doors of the van were not properly
secured. She kicked them open and rolled out onto a back road ten
miles north of Houston. She lay there for three hours before a passing
motorist discovered her.
Jane was taken to hospital where Kirsty Faber and her parents Dick
and Tina (whom Jane had got to know very well) sat by her side.
The following day Jane's parents and her sister arrived in Houston.
They were relieved that she was safe and that everything could return
to normal.
But things could never return to normal. Jane herself had changed.
She spent two weeks in the hospital. The fall from the van and all
she had suffered at the hands of Apache Joe took time to heal. While
in hospital she was interviewed by grief counsellor Elizabeth Szymanski
and, importantly, Walter Crondheim - a special agent of the FBI.
Jane was coping with what had happened to her by a single minded
desire to see the killer brought to justice. She co-operated as
fully and completely as she could with Crondheim. He was impressed
with her ability to recall the smallest details and felt sure that
with this new information, the killer would be apprehended.
Upon leaving hospital Jane found that her studies did not grip
her as much as they did before. There was something missing in her
life, a void that her boyfriend could fill. She finished with David
Bowyers within days of returning to campus. To date this is still
Jane's latest relationship.
Jane felt angry at herself for what had happened. She felt that
if she had been better able to take care of herself she might never
have been abducted in the first place. Following the advice of a
notice board near to her lectures she enrolled in a local Taekwondo
classes. One her instructors, Charles 'Chuck' Wu, believed that
Jane had national or possibly international potential in the sport.
Jane's studies began to suffer over this time. She found Taekwondo
useful as a means to thrash out her anger and frustration, but she
also obsessively followed the progress of the hunt for Apache Joe.
Two weeks after Jane returned from hospital Apache Joe killed again.
Special Agent Crondheim seems no closer to catching him. Jane began
to bombard him with calls.
Jane's life was now far from unremarkable. Over the next few years
her skill in Taekwondo reached heights she could never have dreamed
of. In addition to local and national competitions she attended
the Taekwondo world championships in 1993 and 1995 (where she amazed
herself by coming fifth). In 1996 she attended the twenty-sixth
Olympic games in Atlanta, Georgia. Buoyed up by the home crowd she
achieved a silver medal. But despite the advice of her new coach
Normie Meyher, she would not give up medicine.
By the end of 1996 Apache Joe had killed twenty times. The case
was taken out of the hands of Crondheim, but the new investigators
Eric Vitrano and Nicole Lavin had no more success than he did. Jane
became increasingly obsessed and on edge. Part of her was scared
that Apache Joe would come for her again, and part of her wanted
him to try so she could beat the crap out of him. It was at this
time that Jane decided she had to stop Apache Joe and those like
him from harming anyone else. She determined to enter the FBI.
In July 1997 Jane graduated the Baylor College of Medicine with
an acceptable medical degree and began her two years of training
to become an FBI agent. Her parents were shocked at the idea, especially
her father. Over the past few years there has been something of
a reconciliation between Eddie Munroe and Danielle, but he could
not hide his shock and disappointment that Jane wouldn't use her
qualification to become a doctor. They had a major falling out,
and the fences have still not been mended to this day. Jane left
a less than happy home life behind when she headed for Virginia
to attend Quantico.
Jane at the FBI
The training was hard and Jane was fortunate to be allowed to attend
the Taekwondo world championships in November 1997 (another silver
medal). After two years of study Jane was assigned to the Washington
office. There she was placed under the wing of Special Agent Rufus
Malone. He was Jane's mentor for her first few months. He noticed
that there was still a great deal of anger in the girl. Jane's obsession
with Apache Joe was unabated - by this stage he had attacked twenty-eight
women, and killed twenty-seven.
Because of her interest in the case Jane was given access to the
case notes. At first agents Lavin and Vitrano were indulgent of
Jane, but she soon began to annoy them. In June 1999 Jane attended
the Taekwondo world championships again. This time she came third.
Normie Meyher was adamant that Jane's work in the FBI was to blame.
He said that she could not expect to be a world-class athlete if
she was holding down a day job. Jane refused to relent and the relationship
between the two of them became strained.
At Thanksgiving 1998 Danielle astounded everyone by turning up
with a man called Greg Keller and announcing that they were going
to be married. Keller had apparently been acting as Danielle's "manager"
for some time, and had arranged a number of gigs for Danni in New
York. Danielle claimed to have been making a reasonable living by
singing in bars and clubs around the city. It later took Jane's
mother six months to talk her husband around to the idea, but Eddie
Munroe eventually consented to the marriage. There was no reconciliation
with Jane, however, even though they were both present at the happy
event in August 1999.
Perhaps it was the romance of the moment, but it was not long after
this that Edward Munroe Jnr wed. Edward had been stationed in Hawaii
for some months had got to know Linda Lie Jie Cheung - a girl originally
from Hong Kong who had been resident on the island for some time..
The whole romance and impending marriage was a whirlwind affair,
and none of the family were even present at the wedding. After the
event Edward couldn't bring himself to tell his father, sensing
that he would not approve of the situation.
In the summer of 2000 Jane took a holiday and headed into Texas
actively looking for clues about Apache Joe. Jane correctly guessed
that Apache Joe would attack his next victim on 7 July. She headed
to the location of his last murder, Big Spring, and looked for clues.
There she saw a motorcycle gang heading out of town on the main
road to Pecos. Jumping to the conclusion that Joe and the gang may
be related Jane followed them. This leap of illogic actually brought
Jane closer to Apache Joe than she had been in eight years.
While passing through Odessa Jane saw Apache Joe heading into an
alley off the main street. Jane abruptly stopped her car and chased
Joe into the alley. The alley forked left and right. Jane broke
left and ran into FBI agents Nicole Lavin and Eric Vitrano. They
had had a tip off that Apache Joe would be in the area. They maintained
that Jane's involvement compromised their operation and allowed
Apache Joe to escape. Although technically true, Jane didn't see
how she could reasonably have been expected to do anything else
in the circumstances. She was nonetheless reprimanded, told never
to have anything else to do with the Apache Joe case and returned
to work in Washington.
At the end of July 2000 Edward Munroe and his wife Linda had their
first child, a daughter called Tsu Mei. Ridiculously Edward still
had not told anyone about the wedding. He was living up to the image
his father had of him. He felt that he could do nothing to destroy
his father's conception. The sisters Jane and Danielle were equally
in the dark about these events.
The XXVII Olympiad
Despite the misdemeanours on her record, the bureau were never
going to prevent Jane from attending the Olympic games in Sydney.
The games were not due to commence until 15 September, but the athletes
headed off in August to acclimatise. Normie was not happy with Jane's
condition.
While in Sydney, Jane got the feeling she was being watched. She
saw the same car day after day, and soon it became too much of a
coincidence to ignore. At the beginning of September, Jane caught
a glimpse of he man behind the wheel of the car. She was convinced
it was Apache Joe. She immediately stole a near-by vehicle and gave
chase through the streets of Sydney. Unfortunately, Jane was not
a particularly skilled driver. The chase ended with Apache Joe escaping
and Jane's vehicle upside-down in the fountain of an indoor shopping
mall.
It turned out that Jane's quarry was not Apache Joe, but a Ukrainian
general called Mikhail Kariskoff. Kariskoff had been the victim
of several death threats and had reacted instinctively when he saw
he was being followed. Kariskoff filed a complaint with the American
government. In the meantime Jane steadfastly maintained that it
was Apache Joe that she had seen.
The whole thing was covered up. Jane was recalled from Australia.
The official story was that she had been involved in a car accident
and was unable to compete. Kariskoff was placated by this. Jane
was furious and felt completely victimised. All Jane's fans at home
(including Kirsty back in Texas) felt for Jane, but none of them
knew the truth
Jane was only allowed to retain her job by accepting a transfer
to the mid-west evidence response team. It was effectively a demotion
from a job in Washington to a job in the arse-end of nowhere, but
it was the only place that would take Jane. She reluctantly agreed
to this, and even more reluctantly agreed to weekly sessions with
a psychiatrist.
Jane was at an incredibly low ebb. She had lost her chance of Olympic
gold. She knew that she may not be in a position to compete at the
2004 games - she might well be too old. Normie Meyher finally washed
her hands of her at this point. He knew the truth of what happened
in Sydney and he couldn't believe that Jane had wasted so much work
and so much talent.
After the games Jane cut herself off from family and from friends.
She didn't even return the calls left by Edward, Danielle and Kirsty.
She moved out of her flat in Washington and headed for Wichita,
Kansas where she arrived on 26 September 2000.

Recent Events
The following events have been highlighted as having special significance
for Jane. Please see the Timeline to place these incidents in context.
27 September 2000
Jane autopsies the body of Jenson Gilgoolie. The greenish mist
that escapes the cranium indicates the presence of a brain bug,
although this is not realised until much later.
2 October 2000
Apache Joe kills again and Jane is chomping at the bit to work
on the case. A psychiatric session between Jane and Artemis Black
goes horrendously awry. This is also the day of the Birmingham riots
that Jane is tangentially involved in.
3 October 2000
Jane is briefly dominated by the spirit of Tic-Tac Loos.
7 October 2000
Jane and Nathan Harlow travel to Clayton, Idaho where a drunk Jane
opens up about her relationship with her father. The pair are later
attacked by brain bugs and see all manner of weird occurrences.
Jane is forced to kill Neil Prentice. This is the first time she
has ever killed anyone and it shakes her somewhat. Jane credits
the evidence of her own eyes and believes steadfastly in the supernatural
nature of the threats evidence response faces.
10 October 2000
Jane tells her fellow agents everything about the Apache Joe case.
She is happy that her colleagues want to help her solve the case.
12 October 2000
Jane is shot during a massive fire fight against a drugs cartel
in Pasadena. She spends two days in hospital as a result.

Jane learns of Nathan Harlow's murder at the hands of the Joker
and flies to New Orleans. Jane and Nathan were friends and she is
extremely upset by his death.
19 October 2000
Harlow's ghost first manifests. Jane is very quick to accept this
turn of events and is very happy that Nathan is still about in one
form or another.
3 November 2000
Jane's friend Kirsty Faber becomes a victim of Apache Joe. Eisenstein
visits Wichita and gives the agents carte blanche to investigate
whatever cases they want as long as they are discreet. The psychic
agent, Hudson, gives the party further clues to Apache Joe that
eventually allows the group to predict where he will strike next.
Jane flies to Texas to comfort Kirsty's parents. She meets Todd
O'Connell for the first time.
4 November 2000
Jane clears out the practice that Kirsty had moved into. It is
a harrowing experience.
10 November 2000
Jane attends Kirsty's funeral in the knowledge that evidence response
is now bending all its efforts to apprehend Apache Joe. By the time
he strikes again in January the group hope to be ready.
15 November 2000
Jane is involved in a protracted battle with a bunch of brain bug
possessed charity workers just outside Winterset, Iowa. She is shot
in the back, and later all the tendons in her left leg are snapped
by an incantation cast by Richard Quail. The damage is so severe
that Jane is taken off active duty for three weeks.
16 November 2000
Jane speaks to Winterset grief-counsellor Agatha Cooper. This,
as well as Kirsty's death, spurs Jane to make contact with her family
again. She phones Danielle later in the day. The damage to Jane's
leg is severe and there is a fear that she may not be able to competitively
compete in Taekwondo again. Jane contacts Chuck Wu and asks for
his advice. She determines to be ready for the next Taekwondo world
championship in November 2001.
18 November 2000
While searching through her family tree Jane discovers that Edward
is married and has a child. She does not know what to do with the

Danielle confides in Jane. She asks Jane to see if she can help
locate Greg Keller, who has gone missing.
27 November 2000
Jane keeps an appointment with Michael Levin in Washington. She
attends a meeting of the United Nations Development Fund and meets
Bill Clinton. Levin tells Jane a great deal about brain bugs (aka
the Signai). Levin gives Jane a necklace that is worth in excess
of $150,000.
2 December 2000
Jane is instrumental in uniting the spirit of Nathan Harlow with
the spiritless shell of the cahuna, Lehoaoah. By this point Jane
has been so affected by the loss of those nearest to her that she
will do anything to get them back
. even dabble in necromancy
by cell phone.
4 December 2000
The Joker attacks Nathan Harlow on flight FB104 resulting in the
destruction of the plane and the death of everyone on board except
Nathan and Jane. Jane is uninjured and wakes in hospital five days
later.

Jane gets answers from Walter Crondheim regarding the Apache Joe
case. She comes to suspect that agents Vitrano and Lavin are using
case S73 as a cover for more nefarious activity.
12 December 2000
Jane accompanied Joshua Blackthorne to Dallas, Texas to watch him
obtain an honorary degree. She discovers that Josh is planning to
retire. Veronica Cunningham, a vengeful ex of Josh's with sorceress
powers places a tarot card in Josh's apartment that causes Jane
to manifest feelings for Josh. She manages to fight off these urges.
After Veronica Cunningham petrified Joshua, Jane threatened the
woman to get him to remove the spell and came very close to killing
her. She only released Veronica when directly ordered to do so by
Eisenstein. Jane is now determined to find a way to restore Joshua
to flesh.
Also on this day, Jane discovered that Vitrano and Lavin had allegedly
captured Apache Joe. Initially shocked, she soon realised that the
person they had caught was not Joe, and now she must determine the
best way forward.
13 December 2000
Due to an amazingly collection of coincidences, bad luck and freak
weather Jane is now in charge of the mid-west team until Artemis
Black returns. Her first case is extremely challenging (LA10749).
Jane travels to Texas as Vitrano and Lavin make their move to tidy
up the Apache Joe investigation. She, Nathan and Mike Colefield
save the life of Todd O'Connell and stop Dick Faber from killing
an innocent man. From Vitrano's team Randy Schmid and Gregory Ruca
are killed. But in order to save their careers, evidence response
and their lives Jane makes a deal that not only allows Nicole Lavin,
Ugo Luick and Elizabeth Szymanski to go free but also results in
the death of fake Apache Joe, Constantine Perez, and the arrest
of Giles Case for his murder. She struggles to come to terms with
these events.
14 December 2000
Nathan Harlow is murdered once again by the Joker. Jane determines
that she will bring him back again.
15 December 2000
Jane uses Mao Sei Ben's jade pendant of Talent to bring Harlow
back to life and his own body. However, she finds herself tied to
Nathan, and incredibly enervated in his presence. She is forced
remain in bed.
16 December 2000
Harlow travels to 1941 to close a time portal and is killed. The
link between Jane and Nathan is severed. However, Nathan makes a
deal with Lillian Winter and creates a new version of the timeline
in which he has no control over his actions and goes on to murder
Jane as well as Jack Burchill. Jane's death is fortunately reversed
when agents Ecks and O'Connell time travel back in time and kill
Nathan. Jane is alive, and with only memories of Nathan stepping
through the portal and never returning. However, Ecks tells her
the entire story and she knows that Nathan is burning in Hell. She
realises that this time he isn't coming back and begins to mourn
her loss. See the section on Time Travel
for more information.
17 December 2000
Jane meets with the Yakuza in San Francisco for leads regarding
Mao Sei Ben.
19 December 2000
Jane allows herself to be possessed by the mirror ghost/vengeance
spirit, Plum Blossom, considering it the only chance the team has
against Mao Sei Ben. Although the geomancer is defeated, the ghost
refuses to leave Jane. When her team try to stop her from leaving
the possessed Jane lashes out. She uses magic to rip off the left
leg of Mathew Wainwright and she splits Jack Burchill from sternum
to stomach. Philip McKraken convinces Plum Blossom that Jane has
a mission of vengeance of her own, and she allows Jane to regain
control of her body. Jane stabilises the fallen agents long enough
for them to be rushed to hospital. Plum Blossom remains in Jane's
mind, but is forced out when Jane travels through the forcefield
erected around the west coast headquarters by Schult.
Jane believes she made the right decision in the circumstances,
but deeply regrets that Burchill and Wainwright were hurt. This
combined with Nathan's recent death has convinced Jane that she
isn't ready for the difficult decisions that come with being a leading
agent. She is quite relieved when in the shake-up she continues
her assignment in the mid-west team, suboordinate to both Artemis
and Benedict.
21 December 2000
Jane locates the remains of Nathan Harlow in the Ventura County
Public Ceremony.
24-25 December 2000
Jane enjoys the Evidence Response Christmas Party at the west coast
HQ with all the currently active (and mobile) agents.
