Game Rule Information

The following changes have been made to the powers and abilities of the Psion. Any published rules for the psion that do not directly contradict the contents of this page still apply.

Class Features

Weapon and Armour Proficiency: I use the rules for Weapon Group Feats (UE p94). At 1st level the Psion gains the Weapon Group (basic weapons) and Weapon Group (crossbows) feats as bonus feats. He is not proficient in any armour or the use of any shield - although because there are no somatic components in psionics psions can wear armour with no chance of spell failure.

Spellcasting: The Psion is the ultimate psychic spellcaster. He uses psionics to create magical effects. Full details of psionics and the way in which it functions in the house rules can be found in the section on psionics. Psions gain access to talents and first level spells at level 1, second level spells at level 4 and to each successive level of spells at every odd-numbered level thereafter to a maximum of ninth level spells at level 17. The psion's caster level is his class level, and the psion uses his Intelligence score to determine bonus spell points and the difficulty of his spell's saving throws.

Talents: In version 3.0 of the third edition rules psions (and indeed all psionicists) had access to talents - 0-level powers that were the psionic equivalent of cantrips and orisons. Therse were removed in the new edition. I have put them back in, which necessitates altering the level of a number of first level powers. This information will not be on the site for its relaunch, but will hopefully be posted before too long. Psions will start play knowing all generic talents as well as those connected with those chosen discipline.

Disciplines: This is a clarification of the rules rather than a set of new rules. All psions must specialise in one of the five psionic disciplines: Clairsentience, Metacreativity, Psychokinesis, Psychometabolism, Psychoportation or Telepathy. This gets them a slightly different list of class skills, and access to a concentrated list of psionic powers.

Bonus Feats: When selecting bonus metapsionic feats, remember the transparency between metapsionic and metamagic feats. This will probably increase your selection.

Psicrystals: These are the psionic equivalent of familiars. Rules for psicrystals are on pp22-24 and 207 of the Expanded Psionics Handbook. Not all psions have psicrystals. You need to take the Psicrystal Affinity feat if you want one. This can be chosen with your bonus feat at first level.
