FAQ

D&D Home > Character Classes > Core Classes > Fighter

In the house rules the fighter class has completely subsumed the role of the Warrior NPC class (DMG p109). All characters that players might perceive as belonging to the warrior class are in fact Fighters. There really didn't see a great deal of point having both of them.

Game Rule Information

The following changes have been made to the powers and abilities of the Fighter. Any published rules for the fighter that do not directly contradict the contents of this page still apply.

Class Features

Weapon and Armour Proficiency: I use the rules for Weapon Group Feats (UA p94). At first level the fighter gains the Basic Weapons feat, and his choice of any four other Weapon Group Feats. This replaces the Simple Weapon Proficiecy and Martial Weapon Proficiency feats that no longer exist in my game. All Weapon Group feats are added to the fighter's list of Bonus Feats. The fighter's proficiency with armour and shields is unchanged.

Variant

The following variant may be considered legitimate options for players of fighter characters. Players shouldn't feel obligued to adopt this options instead of the standard class. Variants don't make the character any more powerful, they simply make it different. "Official" variants are found in a variety of sources, notably the Unearthed Arcana and DMG. For a complete list of all the variants I use in my campaigns follow this link.

Thug: A rough street fighter. The thug gives up one bonus figther feat in return for more class skills and more skill points. It is such a tiny variation that it can have no adverse impact on a campaign and can stand unchanged. See Unearthed Arcana p51.

Planar Substituion Levels: Fighters who make the prerequisites may swap out certain class abilities in favour of planar-related ones. At 4th level they may swap their bonus feat for Planar Study. At 8th level they may swap their bonus feat for Align Puissance. At 12th level they may swap their bonus feat for Aura of Stability. They also gain Knowledge (the planes) as a class skill. See Planar Handbook pages 27 and 32 for more details.
