D&D Home > Character Classes > Core Classes > Favoured Soul

The Favoured Soul was one of the new core classes presented in the Miniature's Handbook. Mechanically there's not a great deal to change for the class, but fitting it in to my own concept of divine magic is a little trickier. As a result the role of the favoured soul has changed markedly. They are not connected with mortal churches and they do not follow gods, instead the favoured soul is the mortal champion of an angellic host. Read on for more information.

Game Rule Information

The following changes have been made to the powers and abilities of the Favoured Soul. Any published rules for the favoured soul that do not directly contradict the contents of this page still apply.

Class Features

Abilities: Charisma plays no role in spellcastings of a favoured soul. They receive bonus spell points based on their wisdom, and wisdom determine how difficult their spells are to resist.

Alignment: Favoured Souls are of good alignment. They are members of organisations allied with the angellic races. The demonic races do not support favoured souls. Any evil favoured souls are characters who have 'turned to the dark side' in a manner similar to a paladin becoming a blackguard. This may affect a physical change on the favoured soul depending on the character's level.

Weapon and Armour Proficiency: I use the rules for Weapon Group Feats (UE p94). At first level favoured souls receive the Basic Weapons feat and two other weapon group feats for free. They are also proficient in the use of their favoured weapon. Favoured souls are also proficient with light and medium armour and with shields (but not tower shields).

Ignore Spell Failure (Light Armour): Favoured Souls gain this feat as a bonus feat at first level.

Ignore Spell Failure (Medium Armour): Favoured Souls gain this feat as a bonus feat at fourth level. If they already have this feat they may select another.

Ignore Spell Failure (Shields): Favoured Souls gain this feat as a bonus feat at sixth level. If they already have this feat they may select another.

Spellcasting: Favoured Souls cast spells in exactly the same manner clerics. They gain access to spells at the same levels that clerics do, and have the same spell point total as clerics. Favoured Souls receive their spell points at dawn each day after one hour's prayer and reflection. The source of this divine power is a not a god but the ruler of a celestial host. These beings are so powerful that they might as well be gods. See the section on divine magic for more information.

Favoured Weapon: Although the favoured soul doesn't have a deity particular angellic orders will favour certain weapons, and it is this weapon that the favoured soul gains the benefits of focus and specialisation.
